From the Editor-in-Chief
That China and India are two powerful economies is a pet theme of the media. But seldom are the irritants in Indo-China relations discussed in depth. The unsolved border issue; China’s posturing on Arunachal Pradesh and its tilt towards Pakistan are matters of concern. We have an article that discusses the ‘core interests’ of China and its shadow on what is being called ‘aggressive’ foreign policy. The article concludes with some suggestions on handling China diplomatically. -- G. Kalyan Kumar   Read the Note.

It is not only trade that binds the EU and India together- they also have global aspirations. India is rightly looking for a greater international recognition as a veritable player on the global stage and is a strong supporter of multilateralism. The European Union has had an impressive track record in multilateral diplomacy as well in maintaining its uniform policy towards sustainable growth, promoting Human Rights principles and countering the threat of international terrorism! Europe and India are now keen on promoting world peace, growth and development.  Read the Article.

President Obama’s Visit to India
Barack Hussein Obama, 44th President of the United States of America, made his maiden trip to India, accompanied by First Lady, Michelle Obama, from 6 to 9 November, making him only the fifth American President to journey down to Indian shores since independence. But the delirious anticipation was palpable not just in the corridors of power in North Block or the boardrooms of India Inc in Mumbai, but, as pointed out by the US ambassador to India, Timothy Roemer, even in the dusty by lanes of Jodhpur and the surrounding areas.    Subscribe to Read.

Bangladesh PM Hasina’s Jail Visit
Anyone visiting this jail and looking at the conditions will be able to understand the extent of the hardship Bangabandhu had to endure and the way he had staked his life, suffering day after day, to carry on the struggle for the rights of Bengalis. He loved the people of Bengal with all his heart. He could never reconcile himself to the sufferings of our impoverished people. That is why the only thing he dreamt of was to find the path that would lead his people away from hunger and poverty.   Subscribe to Read.

China’s Assertiveness Against India
How China’s assertiveness is impacting on India? Many in India see a firm linkage between China’s ‘core interests’ principle and its external behaviour especially towards India. At the government level, however, there is a tendency on the part of the two sides to downplay their perceptional differences. China has conveyed to India that Beijing will take care of each other’s “core interests and major concerns” during the visit to China by the special envoy of the Indian Prime Minister in July 2010.   Subscribe to Read

Opinion Piece by William Hawke
Having been born in September 1945, I am on the leading edge of the ‘Baby Boom,’ which actually commenced in Canada in 1946/47 after our brave servicemen returned from the war in Europe and the Pacific. During this so-call ‘boom’ that lasted until around 1960, the population of Canada shot up dramatically. I have five siblings – John, Honey, Peter, Tony and Patti – so there were six of us including me. As that generation of children grew up to become taxpayers, there was plenty of tax money in the kitty to afford to pay the old age pensions of our aging parents; but what about the current number of taxpayers?   Subscribe to Read.

G20 Summit in Seoul, Korea
The currency war between US and China had its echo at the Summit. Global leaders including PM Dr. Manmohan Singh agreed to refrain from “competitive devaluation” and bring in exchange rate flexibility to ensure that no country gets undue advantage. “Advanced economies including those with reserve currencies will be vigilant against excess volatility and disorderly movement in exchange rates”, G-20 leaders declared at the end of the two-day Summit, in the backdrop of the US demanding that Chinese currency Yuan should be appreciated to check China from taking advantage in international trade.   Subscribe to Read.

Gujarat Beckons
The journey of Gujarat since the 1960s is marked by several vital transformations. Back in the 1960’s, its economy was driven by textiles, earning it a euphemism of Manchester of the East. During the period of 1960–90, Gujarat established itself as an undisputed leader in various industrial sectors including textiles, engineering, chemicals, petrochemicals, drugs and pharmaceuticals, dairy, cement and ceramics, and gems and jewellery, amongst others. The post-liberalisation period saw Gujarat’s State Domestic Product (SDP) rise at an average growth rate of 14 percent per annum in real terms.

Merits of India-South Korea CEPA
The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Korea allows 75 percent of Korean export goods to India to face no tariff or an eight-year phasing out of tariffs. India’s tariffs on another 10 percent of goods will be phased out after 8-10 years. India signed CEPA with Korea in August 2009. It is more than merely a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), as it covers not only trade in goods but also investments, services and bilateral cooperation.     Subscribe to Read.

India-Japan Bilateral Relations and Strategic Depth
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s visit to Japan had the potential to catapult India-Japan bilateral ties to a higher trajectory, if the dimensions of the relationships encompassing economic, security and political components are put in perspective. The pace of growth in these areas may be slow, but the commitments and sincerity of both sides were in display to understand the resilience of the evolving relationship.   Subscribe to Read.

India-Bhutan Relations are Hassle-free
India’s South Asian neighbours at times look at India’s moves, initiatives and gestures with suspicion, and often follow an outward looking approach instead of considering India’s status and development as a source of their own stability and development.    Subscribe to Read.
