On the sidelines of Aahar International Food Fair 2005

An Interactive Session on Cooperation in Food Processing organized by the Indo-African Society and Confederation of Indian Food Trade and Industries, showcased India’s technological prowess in the food processing sector to African nations. The Ethiopian Ambassador Dr Teketel Forssido addressing the session said, “technology should go down from the higher echelons of research institutes to the farming community.” According to him, food processing technology would help in processing, packaging and storage of food items. The business community should help generate technology. Market survey should be done by the institutes and on that basis the needed technology should be provided. Engineering technologies should grow since opportunities are very wide. Cooperation and coordination of many countries and scientists is important. Business is not usual any more. Farmers produce and companies take those produces to thousands of miles away. Many people and technology are involved in the process”. He said, “the session should be an eye-opener for greater cooperation between India and Africa in the food processing sector”.
The Secretary General of Afro-Asian Rural Development Organisation, Mr AY Adam, presented the theme of the session. He enumerated the technical and institutional limitations of the African societies. According to him insufficient technical know-how, limited adaptation of innovation and anxiety towards new technologies are high in African countries. The interactive session had presentations from some of India’s premier research and technology institutes such as the Central Food Technological Research Institute
(Mysore), Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering & Technology, Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Indian Institute of Packaging, and National Dairy Research Institute. The delegates from Africa were convinced of India’s technology potential through the presentations, which were imbued with cost-effective technologies that can help Africa in the food processing sector.
Mr Arun Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industry, released the special issue “India-Africa Cooperation in Food Processing”. The interactive session was organised by the Confederation of Indian Food Trade and Industry
(CIFTI), Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), and the Indo-African Society.
