The maiden edition of Diplomatist in the New Year is an amalgam of many power-packed articles of great variety and depth.

The musings on emerging global trends have come from Davos, where the creame de la creame of business, diplomacy, and governments met at the World Economic Forum. The silver lining is that amidst fears of a slowing world economy, particularly the US economy, the summit saw the diplomats and head of states as a relaxed lot in contrast to the frayed nerves of the business class, indicating the relatively peaceful international scenario in contrast to the blowing winds of disquiet in the financial sector. The article, Davos Summit Calls for Collaborative Leadership captures the fine spirit of the summit.

The strategic value of the Indian PM’s visit to Russia and China and the high profile visits of the French President, British PM and Hungarian PM to India are also documented in detail. In the coverage of international summits, the focus is on analytics; the CHOGM Summit in Kampala, ASEAN Summit in Singapore and the Indo-EU Summit in New Delhi stand out for their message to the world.

The expanding influence of Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) as a strategically significant regional group can be read at Formidable Grouping with Shared Interests. The article takes a closer look at the catalytic role of Indian Ocean Rim Association in developing global trade and economic cooperation among the member countries.

The fast-paced development of Kuwait in the past few years is described in a series of articles about that oil producing country, which is mulling big plans for economic growth, diversification, infrastructure, tourism and trade.

The interview with H E Mr Dominique Dreyer, Ambassador of Switzerland to India is interesting due to Switzerland’s interest in India’s B2B segment. The obituary Benazir Bhutto (1953-2007): Daughter of Destiny Dies, Fighting for Democracy pays tribute to the slain leader whose assassination has dealt a blow to the cause of democracy in the South Asian country.

The tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008) surveys the inspirational life and achievements of a diplomat whose name is most-known for his epoch-making conquest of Everest.

The travelogue Buddhist Express…All Abroad shares the experience of a pilgrimage on the ‘Mahaparinirvan’, Special Train of the Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). The odyssey takes the traveller to some of the world famous Buddhist sites such as Bothgaya, Rajgir, and Nalanda. There is more to it than a train journey. So, read on…
