British PM Theresa May Redefining Global Leadership

Cover Story By Alankar Srivastava

It is a historic moment for Britain, which presents an opportunity for course correction. British PM Theresa May should set the priorities right, and refocus politics on those people who feel left behind by society. It is worth mentioning that the Brexit vote is a wake-up call for governments across the world.

The post-Brexit United Kingdom welcomed a new prime minister at 10 Downing Street - Theresa May. The last time the country had a female prime minister was in 1979, which was the beginning of Margaret Thatcher’s 11-year rule.

2016 is turning out to be a momentous year as female politicians are redefining the global leadership. Prime Minister Theresa May could be joined by Hillary Clinton by the end of the year. In the 70-year history of the United Nations, there has never been a female secretary general. The year 2016 might change that given the strong candidature of Helen Clark, the former prime minister of New Zealand and current head of the United Nations Development Program. She is one of the 6 female candidates in the running to become the world’s top diplomat.

Reshaping UK Economy Post-Brexit

In order to reshape the UK economy outside the European Union, British PM Theresa May has come up with an industrial policy to ‘deliver an economy’ that works for all.

In the post-Brexit world, UK needs a competitive advantage. The newly created Cabinet Committee on Economy and Industrial Strategy is a step in the right direction, and reflects the vision of PM Theresa May.

"We need a proper industrial strategy that focuses on improving productivity, rewarding hardworking people, with higher wages and creating more opportunities for young people so that, whatever their background, they go as far as their talents will take them. We also need a plan to drive growth up and down the country - from rural areas to our great cities," British PM Theresa May said.

Work ing Closely with PM Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated British PM Theresa May on assuming office, during which she said she looks forward to working closely with Modi.

While affirming India’s commitment to further strengthen the strategic partnership between both countries, PM Narendra Modi also appreciated Britain’s consistent support to India in various global fora.

British PM Theresa May has inherited a heavy burden. Going ahead, British PM Theresa May must unite the Conservative Party and ensure a favourable divorce from the European Union. Let’s hope PM Theresa May usher in a new era for Britain and the world.
