Global warming is on the rise, and although certain natural factors do contribute to global warming, it largely remains a man-made havoc. It is apparent that if we, collectively, don’t stem the current trend of global warming, there is a great chance of ensuring another global catastrophe. However, certain regions could, perhaps, benefit from rise in temperatures, such as in higher latitudes where climate changes may lead to higher agricultural yields, lower winter mortality, and a possible boost in tourism—imagine holidaying in one of the northern seashores as opposed to the Mediterranean. Our cover story highlights this alarming phenomenon.

According to Goldman Sachs, the year 2050 will be the hallmark of economic success for BRIC countries. The estimate highlights the combined economy of the four countries outperforming the six superpowers of G6. This year marks the 150th anniversary of India’s first war of independence, termed as the Sepoy Mutiny by some, and ‘1857: Different Perspectives’ is a narrative of that historic event from various standpoints.

For the first time since its inception, SAARC expanded its membership and has welcomed Afghanistan as its eighth member. Another first was when five observers from outside the region attended the 14th SAARC Summit that was held recently in New Delhi. Our photo feature highlights this historic summit. Africa has been the focus for several global development initiatives that mark a renewed commitment on the part of the international community towards its development. The article ‘Opportunities in Africa for Indian Industries’ explores the opportunities and investment in Africa’s resourceful sectors.

Luxembourg offers an exceptional range of assets and opportunities for carrying out business with other European countries as well as Asian countries like India. Focusing on the strengthening of global trade and economic ties, ‘Luxembourg-India: Partnership Ahead’ highlights future cooperation between India and Luxembourg. Canada nearly always appears to be just a modest region remaining in the shadow of its neighbour. ‘Canada’s Contribution to War on Terror’ provides a reality check on the country’s self-effacing yet decisive engagement in acts for peace beyond its borders.

It is always a pleasure and enriching experience to meet with Canadian High Commissioner Malone who, also rather modestly, describes himself as an occasional scholar: His latest book, The International Struggle Over Iraq: Politics in the UN Security Council, 1980-2005, hit the non-fiction bestseller list in India. In the last Diplomatist supplement, we discussed Indo-Canadian relations; this time around, we discuss his life and views as an author. The insightful views of this erudite diplomat on the role and workings of the UN Security Council provide useful reading on the complex machinery of the UN.

Our focus country in this issue is Azerbaijan, once a major stopover on the Great Silk Route. An ancient land well known for its Bronze Age petroglyphs, medieval minarets and mosques, and famous carpets, our feature focuses on Azerbaijan’s growing economy in the 21st century.
