 Editor's Note

Welcome to the March-April edition of the magazine. The countdown for the Olympic Games in Beijing has started. It will be appropriate to scan through the imbroglio of human rights vs Olympics.

Our Cover Story spread in two articles, examines this burning issue from all sides. Incidents in the past few months have raised global concerns about the scant respect being paid to human rights by those expected of exemplary behavoiur as official organizers of Olympics. The counterpoint argues for preserving the sanctity of the games as a great unifier of human spirit and the need to insulate the event from all motivated charges and controversies.

The coverage of the Indo-Africa Forum Summit looks at the strategic implications of that gathering and analyses the African strategy of India.

The efforts of the European Union to usher in a stable and secure world do not need any elaboration. An interview with H.E. Mrs. Daniel Smadja, the Ambassador - Head of Delegation of the European Commission to India, Nepal and Bhutan spells out the dynamics of the EU strategy.

There is adequate coverage for the SAARC region this time; two articles dealing with the democratic urges of Nepal and Bhutan are surely a good read. The assassination of Benazir Bhutto, and the aftermath including the outcome of elections in Pakistan are being analysed by David Bersamian, a leading writer from the US. The spotlight on Bangladesh is timely and discusses its recent advances in social and economic sectors.

We are introducing a new section - Bilateral Notes, to record the important diplomatic engagements of India with the rest of the world. This is expected to be very useful to the diplomatic community and researchers.

It will not be inappropriate to have a peek at the implications of India’s Budget 2008 as India reels under the assault of rising inflation. The concerned article analyses the budget with insights into the budget proposals and probes whether it is suitably augured to stimulate the economy in standing up to the challenges set off by a slowly but steadily engulfing recession.

Other articles such as Dalai Lama, Canadian women in Combat and Kanha National Park will enlighten you and I hope all the content will measure up to the standards we have set so far.
