CHANDRA SHEKHAR
(1927-2007)

-- By  Our Staff Correspondent

The nation has lost one of its most dynamic and respected politicians— a man of few words, yet one who exhibited great vitality and courage. He was a charismatic parliamentarian with a socialist outlook and served as President of socialist Janta Party since 1977.

Chandra Shekhar was born in Ibrahimpatti in Balia district in Uttar Pradesh on 18 April 1927. He held a post graduate degree in political science from Allahabad University and proceeded to make a career in politics. In 1962, he was first elected to the Rajya Sabha and later joined the Congress Party and became its General Secretary in 1967.

With the loss of the former Indian Prime Minister, came the end of a great era. He was known as the calming face of Indian politics and headed the coalition government from 1990-91 as India’s 11th Prime Minister. He helped the nation cope at the time of economic crisis through statesmanship and astuteness. He took all decisions to safeguard the interests of the country and its people.

Chandra Shekhar was a people’s man who spoke fearlessly against injustice, and his contribution to Indian politics will inspire generations to come.
