Editor's Note
Dear Readers,
The new edition of Diplomatist is packed with the latest Diplomatic initiatives across the world. The G8 Summit, held in Japan’s Hokkaido city, drew universal attention for its focus on Climate Change and the consequent decision to bring down carbonaceous emissions by fifty percent in another 12 years. India and China wanted the top industrialized countries to cut the emissions first and lead by example. The issue of Climate Change continues to resonate in world forums.
It is in this context, the Japanese roadmap for a low carbon society assumes utmost importance. Unveiled by the Japanese PM, the homegrown action plan involves everyone in the task of bringing down emissions by advocating switchover to alternate technologies and above all a new mode of thinking. What is novel about this roadmap is its bottom up approach, where the citizen too has a central role. We are privileged to have access to this document authored by the Prime Minister of Japan and it is our Cover Story. We hope this will inspire more such initiatives from other countries.
Some other important summits are also documented. The SAARC Summit in Colombo and the BRIC Summit in Russia stand out for the common concern about food and energy security. It is heartening to see that summits are explicating these issues and vouch for collective action. The big gap between rhetoric and action needs to be narrowed. It is hoped that the summit leaders will show statesmanship to rise above partisan differences and implement the right strategies to benefit the human society.
Among the high profile visits, we have reports on the visits of the Syrian President, the Bhutan Prime Minister and the King of Brunei to India. Delegations from SICA, Brazil and Ecuador to India have also been covered.
Luxembourg, the emerging financial capital of Europe is profiled for its potential in tourism and MICE segments. As a hot investment decision, it is looking for Indian investors. Finally, the feature on Mongolia is sure to fascinate our readers. Happy reading…
