To Diplomatist Editor,

Sir,

Your article ‘Indian Diplomacy in Myanamar – Engagement is the Key’ (Diplomatist: 8 July 2011) has highlighted once again our miserable handling of diplomatic ties with our neighbour Myanamar. It is a strange irony of fate that during Pandit Nehru`s time, the PM`s of both countries were great close and intimate friends.

There is a great fund of goodwill among the common masses of Myanamar towards India. Why do we not take advantage of it?

Moreover there is strong cultural affinity between us. One positive outcome of the latest elections could be strengthening of cultural and socio-political ties. There is hardly any evidence of it. Student exchange programs/ties could also bolster good and harmonious relations. I hope these facts are taken into consideration by the authorities concerned and a package of programs is offered to Myanamar as part of our Look East Policy.

Regards,
Dr. S.K. Pachauri IAS Ret’d
